An archival pigment print — sometimes called a Giclée print — is produced using pigment-based inks rather than dye-based inks. Pigment inks offer superior light stability and color permanence. The substrate is 100% cotton rag paper, which is acid-free and lignin-free, meaning it will not yellow or degrade over time as wood-pulp papers do. Together, these materials meet the standards set by the Fine Art Trade Guild for museum-grade reproduction.

Yes. Pigment-based inks combined with cotton rag substrate achieve the highest permanence ratings available in fine art reproduction. However, no print is entirely immune to light damage. We strongly recommend framing with UV-filtering museum acrylic and avoiding prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or high-intensity artificial light. Display illumination should be kept below 200 lux for color prints.

Every acquisition includes a formal Certificate of Authenticity, issued by the George R. McLean Estate. The certificate bears a unique certificate ID, the print title, year, location, medium, collection, edition size, and date of acquisition. It serves as provenance documentation for insurance, resale, and institutional record-keeping purposes.

Yes. The George R. McLean Photo Archives accommodates tax-exempt institutional acquisitions. Museums, universities, and qualifying non-profit organizations should contact the archive directly with proof of tax-exempt status (such as a 501(c)(3) determination letter or equivalent institutional documentation). We will coordinate a tax-exempt checkout session or an alternative acquisition arrangement.

A private acquisition is a facilitated purchase arranged directly with the archive outside of the standard online checkout flow. This may involve custom sizing requests, edition arrangements, institutional acquisitions, or acquisitions requiring enhanced discretion. Private acquisitions are handled by our admin team and use a secure, time-limited Stripe checkout link generated specifically for the collector.

Our team will verify availability and pricing, then generate a secure, time-limited Stripe checkout link sent directly to your email. The link is valid for 24 hours and can only be used by the designated recipient.

Private acquisition pricing is validated against our internal database and reflects the same pricing as standard online acquisitions. For custom sizing or special edition arrangements, pricing is quoted based on production specifications. All private acquisitions include the same Certificate of Authenticity, archival packaging, and provenance documentation as standard purchases.

Private acquisition links use Stripe's secure checkout infrastructure with server-side price validation — the price cannot be altered by the recipient. Each link is tied to a specific photograph and size, expires after 24 hours, and is associated with the collector's email address. Payment is processed directly through Stripe with the same PCI compliance standards as our standard checkout.

Each print is interleaved with acid-free tissue, supported by archival backing board, and shipped flat within rigid protective packaging. Prints are never rolled. All shipments include insurance and tracking. Domestic and Canadian shipments are processed through our standard shipping partners.

Following acquisition, your print is produced and inspected over 2–3 business days. Estimated delivery is 7–14 days from the date of purchase, depending on your location. You will receive a shipping confirmation with tracking information once your print has dispatched. International shipments outside the US and Canada are handled on a case-by-case basis — contact the archive for arrangements.
